Mirny and Nyurba MPD (Mirny production site)

Opened in 1969, this pipe is a primary deposit that stands out among all other known rough diamond deposits in West Yakutia thanks to the unusually large size of diamond crystals and high diamond ore grade. The pipe is located in the basin of the Irelyakh river, in the upper reaches of its right tributaries, Ulakhan-Yuryakh and Machchoba-Salaa creeks, 16 km southwest of Mirny town.

The pipe is currently being developed by underground mining. Open-pit mining operations completed in 2011.

Mir kimberlite pipe was discovered in 1955. Diamond content of the pipe is high and the average diamond grade exceeds 3 carats per ton. It is located in the left bank area of the middle course of Irelyakh river within the limits of Mirny town. Mir pipe has being developed by underground mining method since 2009; open-pit mining completed in 2001. Due to the incident at the Mir mine in August 2017, mining operations were suspended, currently the field is on conservation.

ALROSA is currently considering the possibility of resuming mining operations.

Sorting, Valuation and Selling

All diamonds that ALROSA mines in Yakutia go to the Diamond Sorting Center in Mirny, where they complete the preliminary evaluation and sorting stage. ALROSA’s second Diamond Sorting Center is located in Arkhangelsk. Preliminary pricing, sale prepping, and the actual sales of gem-quality diamonds are handled by the United Selling Organization of ALROSA in Moscow and the Yakutsk Diamond Trading Enterprise (YaPTA) in Yakutsk, while the Commeral Enterprise in Mirny evaluates, processes, and sells industrial diamonds.

ALROSA’s sales and representative offices are located in the major world centers of the diamond trade: Antwerp, Ramat Gan, Dubai, Hong Kong, New York, and Mumbai. Since 2016, ALROSA has also been holding diamond auctions at its Vladivostok branch. Further information on the company’s sales divisions is found here.
