Rough diamonds are nature’s rarest creation, a unique form of pure carbon. Most scientists believe that diamonds are formed as deep as 200 km underground, where temperatures reach 1300 degrees Celsius, and the pressure is immense. Afterwards, these minerals are carried closer to the surface by streams of volcanic magma. Many natural rough diamonds are hundreds of millions, if not billions, of years old.

There are no perfect crystals in nature, and no two rough diamonds are identical — which is why to properly classify diamonds, we need to sort them by more than 8000 criteria. The description of a diamond crystal covers 4 key classification parameters: weight (size), crystal form, imperfections (quality), and color.

All rough diamonds mined by ALROSA are evaluated and sorted in full compliance with Russian and international standards. Due to their numerous excellent properties, Russian diamonds are in great demand all over the world.
Rough diamonds are also divided
Rough diamonds are also divided into gem grade diamonds and technical grade diamonds. Both types have exceptionally high hardness, chemical resistance, and thermal conductivity, but gem grade diamonds have better visual features, i.e. do not exhibit any flaws, such as cracks, visible impurities, and sharp color changes. Because of this, they can be cut into diamonds, which are a widely used in jewelry Two thirds of all rough diamonds mined by ALROSA are either gem grade or near-gem grade.
Technical grade
Technical grade diamonds also find their uses in a variety of fields, from micro-incision eye surgery to oil well drilling, electronics, nuclear physics, and astronomy.
Since ancient times
Since ancient times, rough diamond weight has been measured in carats. The word carat comes from the name of carob tree seeds. One carat equals 0.2 grams.
